Cuba
Trips
| Cuba Trip #1 - (Nov 1998) Rusty assured me that I would be fine
... but I wasn't so sure. I'd never really been on my own like this before ... and
to Cuba ... with some Marine I just met! But after hours and hours of toiling over
the decision, I decided to confront my fears of the unknown and just go for it. The
whole thing was just crazy but I really wanted to be with Rusty. So on November 5 I
was on my may to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. When I arrived in Cuba, Rusty had beautiful
flowers waiting for me. It was just awesome. It seemed that we had been
together for a very long time. The Marine Corps Ball was amazing. We had so
much fun but like all good things, this one too came to an end and I had to go home and I
left on November 13. |

Cuba Trip #2 - (Feb 1999) The first trip to Cuba was so
fantastic, I had to go back ... seeing Rusty was nice too. So I went back to the
south eastern corner of Fidel's Island to the little sanctuary of democracy and beauty to
see my guy. Somehow he got me to go snorkeling and kayaking on this trip. He's
always pushing me to do things that I either fear or aren't interested in ... but somehow
I seem to always have a good time. |
Bed & Breakfasts - Pretending we live in a big old house with breakfast
cooking maids.
| Sugar Hollow Farm B&B ('98)- Beautiful place
way out in the woods. It was quite a change for me compared to hot, dry Cuba.
We hiked, slept late, and ate like there was no tomorrow. |

 |
The Legacy of Williamsburg B&B ('99) - So the hospitality was
lacking ... Williamsburg was charming and the house itself was a classic old mansion.
On the first floor there was a big game room. Chris and I drank wine
and I let her beat me at pool and checkers. What a great break away from the daily
grind. |
SUMMER 1999
Virginia Beach - The
summer of 1999 Rusty spent in Virginia Beach attending a formal Marine Corps school.
This happened to work out just perfectly for us since I lived just down the road a
few hours in Alexandria, VA ... quite a change from Cuba. Every weekend, I would
drive to VA Beach to see him or he would come up to Alexandria to see me. What a
great summer.
| Hanging out on the beach - The Bachelor Officers'
Quarters was right on the beach. What a rough summer ... |
 |
| Halloween with the "Cynical Class" - What do you get
when you put 35 Marine Corps captains and lieutenants back into a college dorm type
setting for a summer? A helluva lot of good times. Halloween was just one of
them. One of our friends ran into another man wearing a priest's outfit ... after
giving him a hard time for a bit, he found out that the man actually WAS a priest!
So he brought him out to meet out pregnant nun ... Chrissy. |

 |
Washington D.C. - I'd lived near DC all my live. But it wasn't until
Rusty's new explorative, "see and do everything" way of life did I truly take
advantage of what the area had to offer.
 |
Cabaret (Aug 99)- I took Rusty to see "The Cabaret"
with Terry Hatcher. Damn she's skinny ... The best part was when the old guy gave
his wife to be a pineapple. She was so thankful for the silly pineapple. So
the next weekend I went to visit Rusty in Virginia Beach and he had a pineapple for his
wife to be too! |
| Monticello - Did you know Thomas Jefferson had a fascination with
clocks? Neither did I until we went to Monticello. He even made a huge clock
above the main door that operated using large suspended weights in the wall. An
amazingly interesting and industrious man who read everything he could get his hands on. |
 |
 |
Arlington National Cemetery - "Ask not what your country can
do for you. Ask what you can do for your country..." and other amazing people
who gave most of, or all of their lives to make our country what it is today are buried in
our most prestigious of cemeteries. Awe inspiring, saddening, yet absolutely
beautiful. |
| Mount Vernon - The first George W. His home was more than a
house. It was a small village with everything a family would need to live
comfortably in the early years of our country. |
 |
 |
Marine Corps Memorial - Chrissy turned into a big fan of the
Marine Corps when she met me. Taking her to the Corps's Iwo Jima Memorial and 8th
& I Evening Parade made her an even bigger fan. |
| New York City (Jan '99) - "You know what
would be fun?" I asked Chrissy. "To take a train up to New York
City, stay at a big fancy hotel, and see a Broadway Show!" She agreed. So
we did it. We took a relaxing train trip north to da Big Apple, ate like kings and
queens and saw Beauty & the Beast. |
 |
 |
 |
Boston (May '99) - Rusty had the privilege of
doing the sword arch at a good Navy friend's wedding in Boston. What a great weekend
- beautiful wedding and seeing the Boston sites. |
| Chicago (Nov '99) - Good friends Louis and
Alli's absolutely beautiful wedding. Fantastic weekend with old college friends. |
 |
 |
 |
Naples - Living only a couple hours away from
Naples, Chris and I have been able to stop over in Naples once in a while to see the
Poppoid, Sally-Wally, and of course stop in Tin City. |
| Trips to Wisconsin - Chris had never been to the
Great Northwoods before. So I've been trying to show her all of its beauty. |
